The students of the BA film and television course opted to explore the picturesque and mystic locations of Rajasthan from 14th to 19th February 2017 as a part of their studies in film locales.
As a part of their curricula, the students accompanied by their faculty Prof. Dinesh Khemani, Prof. Mayuresh Belsare and Prof. Amisha Dawda, recently experienced from a filmmaker’s point of view the process of reconnaissance and learnt how mis-en-scene techniques were applied for filming some memorable films such as Tere Naam, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Zubeida et al.
The IV started with the tour of the imposing Jaisalmer Fort that was built in the 14th century by the Rajput kings and housing an entire village within its fortified walls. The fort acquired its moniker of a ‘golden’ fort after the noted filmmaker Satyajit Ray shot Shonar Killa here. The architectural splendor and thoughtful planning to counter an enemy attack, is a hallmark of its construction that lasted for over five decades, left everyone spellbound.

The next destination on the itinerary was Kuldhara, a haunted village now in ruins in the desert. Legend has it that the entire village including the statute of the temple deity vanished overnight. The premise being the decision to protect the honour of a villager’s daughter whom the king’s general wanted to marry. A stopover for an overnight stay in the tents on the sand dunes heightened the sense of adventure that is so much a part of every AV production process.
Talking of mysterious palaces and forts, the next stopover was Jodhpur’s impressive Mehrangarh fort that occupies a place of prominence. Based on several accounts, many are rumored to have experienced vibes of a different kind here. This fort has also been the preferred location for shooting of popular bollywood movies.
The visit on the final day to the local news channel In-24 was truly an enriching experience. The students learned about the process of studio-based news reading, editing and marketing and distributing it, while interacting freely with the channel staff.
Thus, with a visually and aesthetically rich landscape to frame and compare their concepts, the students captured the essence of the region and made the best of this industrial visit.
